Most Common Blind Rivet Applications

A blind rivet is a two piece fastener consisting of a rivet body, sometimes called a "sleeve", and the setting device called a mandrel, stem or nail. A blind rivet is used when access to a joint is limited to one side cannot be seen from the other side of the joint. This is where it derives the name blind rivet. This type of rivet is set by pulling the mandrel head into the rivet body, which expands the rivet body and causes it to flare against the reverse side. As the head of the mandrel reaches the face of the blind side of the rivet, and at a pre-determined force, the mandrel will snap at the break point of the mandrel. The rivet body then forms a tight joint, the head of the mandrel remains encapsulated in the rivet body, and the mandrel stem is ejected.

Blind rivets can be used in non-structural or structural applications, and are available in many different styles. Blind rivets are among the best choices as a low-cost, easy-to-install, permanent jointed fastener. Blind rivets are used in many industries including, HVAC, automotive, electronics, lighting, furniture and appliance manufacturing. You'll find them used in garage doors, leaders and gutters, and many other settings.

Manufacturing & Quality

Blind rivets are manufactured from a wide variety of materials and alloys including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, Monel, copper, nylon and plastic. They are available in dome (protruding), large flange, and 120 degree countersunk head styles. Diameters range from 3/32" to 1/4". Grip lengths range from 1/8" to 1" and are proportional to the rivets diameter. Non-structural blind rivets include: "pop" style, break-mandrel blind rivets; multi-grips; closed-end; mate-type; soft-set; and micro-rivets. Structural blind rivet include, Q-Rivets, Monobolts, Interloks, and T-Rivets.

Why Use A Rivet?
  • They're economical. Blind rivet costs are low compared to other fasteners.
  • Once driven, they require no additional installation work or maintenance, and no supplementary parts such as nuts or lock washers.
  • They're secure. Blind rivets create a tamper-proof, permanent joint.
  • They provide consistently uniform results with a minimum of inspection expense.
  • They facilitate the joining of different materials and materials of non-uniform thicknesses.
  • They allow for high rates of production with a minimum investment in installation machinery.
  • Rivets are versatile. In addition to their use as aerospace and automotive fastener, they can be used for electrical connections, stops, pivots, cam followers, inserts, spacers, and as decorative elements.
