What Is A Military Rivet?
Rivet part numbers that begin with AN or MS refer to rivets that are considered military rivets. AN rivets refer to rivets that comply with Air Force-Navy Aeronautical Standards. MS rivets refer to rivets that comply with military standards. The term mil-spec refers to military specification. The most common mil spec rivets are the M24243 series blind rivets. Most of the old military standard rivets have been replaced by aerospace standard rivets (NAS/NASM). These are the same standard parts, except the custodian of the standards have been changed from the U.S. Military, to the National Aerospace Standards Committee. However, these same aerospace standard rivets are still used by the military for defense-related projects and applications. Beyond these military and aerospace standard rivets, there are also rivets made as proprietary parts for specific agencies within the U.S. Department of Defense establishment.
Common Military Rivet Applications
Military rivet applications include firearms, gun mounts, military shelters, assemblies used on trucks and Humvees, and many other items used by the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Military Rivet Styles And Types
Military rivets are manufactured in many forms including solid rivets, blind rivets, rivet nuts, threaded inserts, semi-tubular rivets, and drive rivets. They are available in both countersunk and protruding head styles. The most common countersunk head style for a solid rivet is 100 degrees. Other degrees of countersunk are available. Among protruding head styles, the universal head is the most common. Other protruding head styles include: round head, button head, flat head, brazier head, and pan head. Rivet diameters can range from 1/16” to 3/8”, and lengths anywhere from 1/16” up through 2 or 3 inches. The longer lengths will be available in the larger diameters, proportionally.
Military Rivet Materials
Military rivets are manufactured in a wide variety of materials and alloys, including steel, aluminum, Monel, Inconel, alloy steel, stainless steel, copper, brass and titanium.
